The Living World Is Not a Backdrop

There is a habit in how we see the world that puts nature behind us.

The mountain becomes the background of the photograph. The forest becomes the setting. The ocean becomes a resource on a balance sheet.

Human activity is treated as the main event. The living world becomes scenery, supply or constraint.

That framing feels normal because it is everywhere.

It is also backwards.

The stage is alive

The living world is not decoration around human civilisation. It is the system civilisation exists inside.

Water, soil, climate, plants, animals and microorganisms are active parts of the conditions that make our lives possible.

This sounds obvious when written down.

It is much less obvious in the way we design economies, cities, products and institutions.

Photography taught me this first

A camera makes framing literal.

You decide what is subject and what is background. You decide what deserves scale and attention. You decide whether a person dominates a landscape or almost disappears inside it.

Over time I became more interested in photographs where the world refuses to behave like scenery — where weather, distance, animals, water or terrain have their own presence.

The human figure becomes part of the composition rather than the reason everything else exists.

That visual instinct became a larger question for me:

What changes when we stop designing the world as though humans stand outside it?

The reversal

The point is not to make people smaller or nature untouchable.

It is to recognise relationship.

Humans need food, homes, energy, transport, culture and good lives. The question is whether we can build those things in ways that strengthen rather than steadily weaken the living systems underneath them.

That is more interesting than choosing between people and planet.

We are part of the living world we are trying to learn how to live with.
