Change Moves Through People

Attention matters. Participation matters more. The useful question is what people can carry forward into the rest of their lives.

There are billions of us.

Environmental conversations often describe that number as pressure: billions of people consuming food, energy, materials and land.

That is true. It is also incomplete.

A person is not only a consumer. The same person can be a voter, employee, neighbour, parent, donor, founder, scientist, artist, customer and friend — often several at once.

That means change can travel through ordinary life in many directions.

Attention is only the beginning

Views, followers and reach can be useful. They are not the same as participation.

Someone can watch a problem for years without changing it. A more useful question is: what can a person carry forward after the post, film, talk or article is over?

A clear idea can travel. A trusted source can travel. A useful tool can travel. A photograph can stay in someone's head. One introduction can create a new partnership. One better choice can become normal inside a family, workplace or community.

That is why I care about culture as much as communication.

People already care about music, film, sport, food, fashion, architecture, travel and one another. The living planet does not need to sit beside real life as a separate topic. It is already underneath all of it.

Participation has to make sense

The answer cannot be to demand that everyone becomes an environmental activist.

Scientists need useful questions and resources. Companies need customers. Artists need freedom. Communities need agency. People need lives that are worth living.

Durable action often happens when ecological value and human value point in the same direction.

That does not remove politics, regulation or responsibility. It simply recognises that guilt is a weak long-term operating system.

What should we measure?

Not only how many people looked at us.

Ask instead: did anyone learn something useful? Did they support good work? Change a decision? Introduce the right people? Build something better? Fund something that mattered? Tell someone else a story worth remembering?

That is the kind of growth I am interested in.

Not a bigger audience around one organisation.

More people finding a useful way to take part.
